We have many location-aware tools, but those I know are pretty much about now and past: showing where people are or where they’ve been. I want to see the future.

I’m ready to share my travel calendar with my friends. I guess many of them would do the same. I’d love to have some tool that would allow me to:

share selected events from my Outlook calendar with my online friends (ideally using my friend lists in whatever tools with friends I specify instead of making another one)

have a notification tool saying something like “Nancy is coming to Europe – may be you should check if you can be around” or “do you know that X are coming to the same conference as you do” or “three of your contacts are going to be within 20 km range from that meeting in Germany next week”

It shouldn’t be that difficult. And we need something like that. In the world where far-away-very-close-friends make us looking at any chance for a meeting it doesn’t make sense to leave it to coincidences…

These are more “notes to myself” from the discussions at BlogWalk Seattle on the nature of (un)conferences; not a coherent text.

The world is changing:

opportunity to connect with and to meet far away people

being there (physically or online) costs more (energy, time, money) – also because now we can connect with those far away

Getting together f2f:

critical mass is important to make sure interesting things happen

you want to be sure in that to get into what it takes to be there

it’s more about opportunities, than problem, which is always difficult to justify

so, what are the attractors powerful enough to attract “right crowd”?

shared goal / topic

strong connections with others

authority trusted enough to rely that the previous two will be there

Events attention models

Two extremes:

centralised/authority – “star performers” who can hold attention of big groups with finely crafted messages and engaging interaction style

distributed/community – “open space” – designed so everyone can attract as much attention as it’s worth in a particular group

Backchanneling – something that happens during an event designed with the centralised model in mind, but without “star performers” who can hold attention – so it’s diverted into other channels. Those “other channels” would be legitimate conversations in the “open space” case, but they are not in the centralised model – hence authority challenges and resistance.

Logistics

Centralised attention events are easier to plan

Distributed attention events are challenging – how to make sure that those who have something to say have an audience?

Enough attractors (critical mass)

Visibility of attractors (knowing whom to talk/listen to)

Movement around (being there at the right moment)

Technology actually enables a lot of that :)

More:

inspiration – backchannel modes by Liz

edit it as eventAttentionModes wiki page

Monday morning I didn’t know that I’ll spend the evening in a company of The Robots (the guys behind 43 Things, 43 Places and All Consuming) and Lee LeFever welcoming Cameron Marlow who happen to be in Seattle with beers and fun.

Between other things we had a nice presentation of Cameron’s dissertation research (photos by Daniel Spils and Erik Benson), talked about blogs and dreams and all other 43 things…

Cameron’s dissertation (The structural determinants of media contagion) should be online soon – there is a lot of good stuff in there… A few things to remember:

there seem to be a correlation between the frequency of updates and number of incoming links for a weblog

static and dynamic links (blog homepage/permalinks, see earlier research) are not that different (on 1 month sample) in terms of connectivity (re: mapping blog communities) – survey data on types of relations behind linking explains some of it

there is no S innovation diffusion curve in the blogosphere – if something picks up it happens exponentially

meme traces are visible in patches – how much ideas travel through backchannel?

survey response rate and travel through the blogosphere really picked up once Cameron added funny banners to it

upflux didn’g gain much support and has been discontinued – bad for blog research

Email to RSVP (I’d really appreciate that) and to get directions (nancyw AT fullcirc DOT com). Kids are welcome as Liz has kids in the 8-11 range. If things get crowded, we can walk down to the neighborhood park. If we don’t have enough food, we can go to the story or pizza place. Heck, maybe someone can beercast/foodcast the event!

Who is in? Go to the comments field of this entry and let us know who you are, where you live and what period would best suit you. If you cannot attend, syndicate this entry to your blog or email your blogofriends.

Of course, it’s going to a be a Dutch treat! And: you don’t have to actually have a blog to come. It’s going to be fun!
