David, it could make sense to check with your university what are their rules regarding uses of previously published material in a dissertation. In many cases (including my own case), it is not a problem and even encouraged to do so, although you do have to sort out copyright issues between publishers of the papers reused and the dissertation publisher.

As for blogging - it's a grey area and heavily depends on if you (and your supervisors) are prepared to take risks and to experiment. So far I didn't have any problem with publishing my own work after parts of it has been blogged. Also, while a paper might be build using blog material it's never the exactly the same (e.g. as discussed in If most of the things I want to say in my PhD are already in my weblog, what’s the added value of the dissertation?)

Btw, my blog is not public domain, it's copyrighted (I should add CC license). I'm looking for the Creative Commons license for the dissertation publishing, will blog on it with more details soon.

I'm trying to understand the implications of blogging for PhD acceptance. I have been told that if a work has been previously published (eg conference speaking) it may not be then used as PhD material. So how does that work in a Creative Commons environment, and in your case you have placed your whole PhD real time in the public domain. Would be grateful for insight/links to unravel this.
